On Monday, we celebrated Johnny Appleseed Day. After learning about Johnny Appleseed, we Johnny Appleseed hats. During science, we created structures using apple pieces and toothpicks, as well as created sails for our "apple boats". In math, we graphed our favorite color apple.
This week, we began adding tools to our math toolbox. We learned that mathematicians can use number lines and hundred charts to help them solve problems. We practiced showing our thinking while adding and subtracting on number lines, and thought about patterns on a hundred chart while collaborating with peers to put together hundred chart puzzles.
This week, as we continued setting up math workshop, we thought about what mathematicians do and the "math talk" that we will use in our classroom this year. Then we practiced explaining our thinking using pictures while completing a problem in our Thinking Notebooks.
